The DIY lines with pre-charged, quick-connect linesets are legitimately installable by a handy homeowner — mounting, drilling the wall pass-through, and connecting the lines without a vacuum pump. The honest asterisk is electrical: most units want a dedicated 240V circuit with a disconnect, and that part belongs to an electrician unless you genuinely know panel work. Budget for that visit.
Rough guide: 12,000 BTU covers about 500 square feet of normal, insulated indoor space. Garages break the rule — concrete floors, big leaky doors, and no insulation mean you should size up 30-50% over what the square footage suggests. Undersized units run flat-out forever and die young; modestly oversized inverter units just cruise. When between sizes in a garage, go up.
Modern inverter heat pumps heat effectively well below freezing — the good ones keep meaningful output into the single digits and below. Two realities to respect: rated capacity drops as the temperature does, and in a hard cold snap the unit spends time in defrost cycles. For most climates it's a real heating system, not a shoulder-season toy.
If it's one open space — a garage, a studio, a big room — one right-sized single-zone unit is cheaper, simpler, and more efficient. Multi-zone earns its complexity when you're conditioning separate rooms with separate schedules. Know that multi-zone condensers dislike running one tiny head at a time, so don't buy four zones to mostly use one.
